Tibok-tibok...yummm 10/03/2010

If the desserts Maja Blanca and the famous candy Pastillas de Leche can make babies this would probably how it would taste like, the Tibok-tibok (Capampangan for Coconut Milk Pudding). This picture does not really justify the richness nor the distinct & delightful taste of this Filipino dessert. If you find yourself lost in San Fernando Pampanga, try to look for Susies Cuisine, and grab a slice of this heavenly dessert.

It's been a while since i've posted anything in the food section of my blog. Well here goes my first post for April.
My wife cooked up a Capampangan recipe, Sinigang sa Bayabas or Bulanglang. Its a variant of the famous filipino soup  but cooked with guava as the soup base and flavor, sorta taste like Thai's Tom yum soup but not that hot and not that sour either. Two common ways to cook this either with Milkfish or locally known as Bangus or with Pork. Again, thanks to my mom for bringing us the main ingredient, small ripe Guavas.  :)

minty mango smoothie
What better way to beat the summer heat than a fresh minty mango smoothie. For this smoothie you just need 2 ripe Mangoes, a fistful of mint leaves, ice, fresh milk and that's it. It's very refreshing indeed and healthy too.

My wife saw some dried gabi / taro leaves in the grocery, and she had always wanted to cook Tinomok for quite some time now. You see, she's a pure blooded Cebuana and anything she tastes out of the ordinary fare piques her interest. Plus recently, together with my friend, mobile247 and his wife, we also had one of the best Laing in town (see previous post).
Decided to go for it, my wife made Tinomok, a Filipino dish famous in the Southeastern area of the Philippines, the Bicol Region.
There are different variations for this dish, but the one she made was with minced pork, ginger and local turnips (courtesy of my parents).

Welcome back to our normal programming folks. On our way home from the Gaiman event last night, my wife and I decided to drop by and shop for the ingredients for tonight's dinner and luckily we were able to score some plump shitake (Lentinula edodes) and crisp enoki shrooms (Flammulina velutipes), which were both fresh and organic.

Sorry to disappoint you guys, but these shrooms were the "good" kind (smirks).

Tonight my wife cooked a simple Japanese soup, yes its 'Sukiyaki' night.

Spontaneous Dinner 03/18/2010

Earlier today, my wife and I headed to Powerplant Mall to take a glimpse of Neil Gaiman's book signing. We arrived around half past four in the afternoon, and by coincidence, saw one of my good friends, mobile247. Our long standing food trip plan was long overdue and tonight seemed like a good night to eat out together with our wives. While waiting for his turn on the book signing, we decided to eat in a cozy restaurant in Rockwell, C2, and man, the food was simply marvelous.
Lesson learned, never plan a food trip and just go with the flow.

For a change, I'm posting pictures that my wife didn't cook but was very happy to enjoy every morsel.

Stake Out Wings... 03/14/2010

After a long grueling night of applying for a job (which was exhilarating and was worth it I guess), my wife patiently waited for me in a cafe wired with downing four cups of coffee and consuming two donuts. Well I can just imagine her like a cop on a stake out. But this is not about Coffee and Donuts, (at least not on this post), this would be the dinner she made after all that. Yes, she was still able to cook dinner after that 9 hour stake out. Well, this blog wouldn't be around if not for her cooking i guess, (pause and thinks, well yeah it can...hmmm..no, I guess it can't). Anyway the wings'  spiciness were creeping and crawling to the tongue and palate, good thing there's the refreshing Nestle iced tea (hoping for a sponsor on this shameless plugging at this point).  Well here's how it looked like. Happy weekend guys and hope to see you again next week.

White Chicken Lah! 03/11/2010

Its been around two or more weeks since i've been craving for "that" Hainanese Chicken. My wife and I even tried the restaurant located in Mall Of Asia, forgot the name, but to my dismay, their "white chicken" was mediocre at best in my opinion, but their dimsum was okay, price wise forget about it. So anyway to keep it short, it didn't really hit the spot.

Then today came.

Again she surprises me with a wonderful rendition of a well-known Singaporean dish, "The" Hainanese Chicken Rice.
The distinct fragrant smell of the ginger took me back to the food streets of Singapore.
I had to come down- act like I didn't know, and had to ask her "what's cooking?".
Man, I didn't even bother to adjust the cam and just took really quick-snaps and just had to taste it right away.
The agony and the waiting is over. The chicken was succulent, the sauce was just right and the rice was superb.

I'm so proud of her cooking, specially when there's no MSG involved.

Here it is, my wife's Hainanese Chicken Rice.
